port authority police officer in new york and new jersey, buried 13 hours in the world trade center. i want everybody to understand i came from a different country and i love this country i served the military and came out and became a cop. what i want everybody to know and want president obama to know, i feel like our country is divided. we need to come together as one. i get to talk to kids. the lady, the mother of that evil kid that shot those kids should have had enough common sense to think, hey, you know what i should be a responsible gun owner and take these guns and lock them out. out of the house and what i want people to remember is our flag is made out of the blood of patriots, do not give up your rights because when you give up your rights you're going to fight with blood to get the rights back. and that second amendment has given us every other amendment and as a sportsman, as a cop, guns are not the problem. we need to become a better country, need to become better parents and responsible. if we're responsible americans, human beings with

7:04 pm
nice to see you and boy, what a story. >> yeah, thanks for having me, greta. this story is bigger and more unbelievable as it goes on. >> greta: i understand that tmz spoke to a witness? >> that's right, basically what happened is, a couple of people that were fans of notre dame, one being a booster that i spoke with, got involved on twitter with this fake girlfriend and the fake girlfriend's sister who then passed away and then during the time that they talked, she actually set up a meeting where she would go meet with the sister after the death and kind of give her condolences, guess what? when she showed up, the gentleman, ronaiah tuiasosopo, largely been blamed for this big hoax, was the one that showed up. we actually have a photograph on our website of them at the game. now, i will tell you, greta, i just got off the phone with people, very, very close to him. and advising him how to deal with the situation. he was not involved in this hoax and i'm telling that after working on this story for several days and talking
7:05 pm
to a lot of people, this kid was just naive, he was involved with the girl online, he started talking to her, he talked to her on the phone, and i know it sounds weird that he didn't have any physical contact, or maybe web chat with her, but i can tell you his reaction now is honest and genuine, coming from people very close with him. he was not involved in this hoax and he did not know about it. >> greta: by who, you mean, manti te'o was not involved, not the friend who apparently has set up this imagery fiction, this girlfriend, right? >> yes, that's right. i mean manti te'o, if you look the at the reports that came out in the first few days, people are calling into question, how did he not know about this, how do you have a relationship for over a year with a young lady in college when you've never seen her before, nor have you interacted with her in person? and also, you know, people can't really believe this was such a great story during the heisman campaign where his grandmother and girlfriend died on the same day and then
7:06 pm
the next saturday he goes out and he crushes everyone on the football field and sky rockets him to become top level in the heisman chase. people start today question whether he kind of knew about the hoax and used it to propel himself, but i can tell you that it's absolutely not true, i just don't see it, greta, and i've talked to a lot of people. but you've said one thing, there's a gentleman here that's going to have to deal with this, this guy who got online and faked he was somebody else and got this all-star in their community in trouble. i think, is going to have to pay and i bet you this kid is just torn apart by what happened. >> greta: well, i'm curious though, apparently, on december 6th, manti learned about this, that it was a hoax. but then two days later, i think it was the heisman day, is that he was still carrying the theme forward. was he didn't know how to back out of it at that point? why was he still running with the ball, so to speak, two days later? >> that's a good question.
7:07 pm
basically what i'm being told you're right on december 6th he found out about it, he actually got a phone call from the same phone number that he had been talking to his girlfriend on, obviously, being shocked by that, told his advisors at school, he started talking about it and figured out, listen, this guy was one of the biggest football players in the country, his team was undefeated going into a championship football game, he decided, look, i'm going to kind of let this slide because i don't want to have a distraction for my team, it's not fair, he kind of felt embarrassed like, you know, this is the kind of thing he didn't want to let out there right before the last two weeks and the big game of his career, of his life so far, now what? a lot of people that i've talked to on the football team are telling me, look, this was the right thing to do and the nice thing to do for the rest of his team, so that the whole time during the game this wasn't the headline and the distraction for everybody, instead, them playing football was the story. >> greta: all right, the guy who is behind the hoax, any
7:08 pm
sort of reflection or thoughts on why-- was it just really, an idea that blew up in his face, a hoax that was, may have sounded a good idea when it started or a disaster or some sinister reason or trying to get even with manti? why the hoax? >> what i know so far, it looks like this thing is the kind of new age, social media prank and even tv show on mtv, they do this to people, c catfish and they film it and they went too far and a naive gullible person and a football player, magnetic guy. in his personal life, quiet, religious, and i can tell you that ronaiah tuiasosopo is his name and he's in hiding and news trucks out in front of his house for days and people
7:09 pm
are waiting for him to comment. so far, manti te'o has not said this is the guy i'm angry at him, i'm pissed off that hasn't happened, but i think we'll probably hear from this guy and his family and if you don't know the tuiasosopos, greta, famous in the united states, and several families in the nfl and several family members coaches of major football teams, so, this is got to be very embarrassing for them and i think in their community, they're probably going to figure out how to deal with this and come forward to the public. >> greta: all right, i do know one thing, next two days to get the latest i'm going to tmz.com because i know you guys are all over it. >> i come on to fox. >> greta: always nice to see you, thank you. >> see you, greta. >> greta: now to the mystery woman who had her identity stolen in the elaborate hoax. inside edition, exclusive footage of diana and she doesn't know him.
7:10 pm
how does she end up in photos as the so-called girlfriend. turns out she went to school with the man allegedly behind the hoax and tonight we're learning more about that alleged master mind and tim is the co-host of football today. he joins us, i understand the man behind behind the hoax made a phone call to someone at his church, is that right? >> that's what we're hearing, greta, but frankly, this is as difficult a story as i've ever have to decipher in my 30-plus years of covering collegiate atd i'll say this based on what you just heard a moment ago from the gentleman of tmz. this may be what our modern internet athletes culture is all about, but we're all still on the learning curve and i think at this stage as we move forward, this should be more about what, what the future holds for those that are being targeted. because it doesn't matter whether you're a football player, or just someone that's successful in any, in any profession, you're going to be a target at this stage. i don't think there's any
7:11 pm
doubt about that. >> greta: all right, you met manti te'o on december 8th. what was your impression of him? >> very good. everything that i thought that his, pre-advertisements were all about, just a yes, sir, no, sir kind of individual and the heisman finalists came to our studio on the day of the army-navy game the same time the heisman trust would give out the trophy that night. the question was asked by my colleague, spencer tillman, of him about the situation with the grandmother and his girlfriend. and i will tell you that even -- his body language at the time, now that i've looked back at the tape was a bit indifferent and i did not notice it obviously until after i went back and looked back at the tape. and he was maybe not the heisman runner up, but won six other major awards, including the lombardi award. and character and discipline
7:12 pm
all comes into play with many of these awards. and i think it's incumbent upon him as soon as possible, to speak up, not wait necessarily for the nfl draft, and to be vetted by all of these general manager, because, yes, he's going to be a first round draft pick. i think there are a lot of concerns from those people, the governing bodies of those particular awards and their trusts with regard to what he did or didn't know after he got that call on december 6th. >> greta: well, apparently, i mean, two days before you met him, but maybe i'm in the minority, but you know, i think of him, he's only 22. >> yeah. >> greta: and when, you know, this is like -- if he knew something about it, that was really stupid. if he got duped, that was pretty stupid, but he's only 22. let him come out, make a statement, by someone and move on. give him a break, he's just 22. >> greta, i'm right there with you. i've he got a daughter that's 22 years of age. i understand what can happen and anybody in our culture that's successful is what the rest of the country apparently
7:13 pm
wants to bring down. we live in a world where good is bad and bad is good. and i think that manti te'o if anything, he's guilty of naivete, but beyond that, okay, once you did know and you understood what was at stake financially, that's where the question comes into play. it's a little bit like that theory of the last investors in the bernie madoff ponzi scheme. if it was just about embarrassment and you couldn't go there, come out and tell us that. because i think most of america would understand it. but, until such time as he does it, i think his cue is going to continue to fall and he needs to answer what the athletic director jack swa swarmbrick said. notre dame is for him. and it's time he comes forward. >> greta: let's leave it alone and then-- >> and then we're
7:14 pm
understanding, absolutely. >> greta: tim, thank you. >> you bet, greta. >> greta: nobody wants to hear from manti te'o as his fellow notre dame students, and student body president says when manti speaks the entire campus will stop and listen. bret joins us, tell me, good evening and tell me what was your thought when you heard this news? >> thanks for having me on, greta. when i heard the news this afternoon i was shocked and confused, and reading the article on deadspin, trying to see what had happened in the story. i think a lot of students had more questions than answers, and a lot of students start today speculate on what actually happened. fortunately, for us, our athletic director, jack swarbrick had the news conference. and a lot of our questions were answered and obviously we have more questions, but when manti tells his side of the story i think we'll hear the final answers. >> greta: are the students rallying around him, so to speak, or are the students more scandalized and you know,
7:15 pm
sort of putting him off to the side. >> right now, a majority of the students are behind manti, believing he's the victim of this cruel hoax. that being said, the students still have a few questions, but they believe when manti comes forward and speaks he'll be able to answer that and we'll be able to keep our full faith in him. >> greta: one thing i thought was peculiar in the story you'd have a boyfriend or girlfriend on the internet you've never met. is that peculiar to you or standard operating procedure now, you can have a boyfriend or girlfriend on the internet and in college and yet never meet the person? >> yeah, i think it will be interesting to hear manti's point of view, but with my generation, a lot more relationships have been starting on the internet. so i don't think it's it's that out of the ordinary to meet a girl online and continue a relationship through the internet. >> greta: at some point you had he want to see the person and meet the person. >> yeah. >> greta: i could see being introduced to the person and
7:16 pm
communicating on the internet, but, after a year or so, you think you might want to see the person? >> yeah, exactly, it will be interesting to hear when manti hears that part of the story. and obviously being a football player, had to be in south bend most of the summer and maybe not able to meet them i'll be interesting in hearing his side of the story. >> greta: i'll be interested. and as i said to the other guest, i hope once we hear it, move it i know 22 seems old to you, but pretty much everybody else who's been there, it's young and can have some bad judgment, too, anyway, thank you. >> thanks so much, greta. >> greta: okay, do you think this story could get any wilder? tell us what you think and vote in our greta wire poll. do you think that manti te'o will speak out in the next week? load up greta wire right now and vote. now to the great state of wisconsin who can forget the storming of the state capitol

7:25 pm
much broader implications here than just what happens in this hostage negotiation. the algerians have already botched it in my view by the way they've handled it over the last three days. all we can do at this point is hope that the remaining hostages get out and that in fact they're still alive and not already dead. the real point here is that this terrorist attack shows the continuing threat across north africa of al-qaeda, and al-qaeda affiliates. so the most important thing to do is reorient our policy and wake up to the fact that the war on terror is not over. >> greta: well, and i guess we've got to get out of denial. the president said back last fall that al-qaeda was on hits heels or something, that's simply not true. tell that to the american hostages tonight, four of them, family members, but if you say the algerians have botched this we now have a situation now, what do we do in light of the fact that al-qaeda is alive and well, they've got americans.

we've got algerians who botched it. what can we do, wait it out? >> i think at this point the foreign governments have largely been excluded and this was a big issue in the united kingdom, for example, they apparently were not told at all that the algerian military was going in. i think for the algerians, their priority making sure that people believed that oil and natural gas drilling was still safe in eastern algeria. so, i think we're going to have to play this out. it's not a satisfactory answer, but the real question is, what are we going to do about the broader threat of al-qaeda and islamic. >> and you said what was apparently one of the provocations was the french and the algerians, let the french use their air space to go to mali and attack rebels there. i'm curious, is this a change in the french. are the french getting more involved in the war. >> these are french colonies and this is what they do in former french kohl list. >> greta: this is as aggressive i've seen the
